The Cranial Base and Inertial Issues

Inertial patterns in the cranial base and cranium as a whole are patterns of fixation where the tissues of the cranium have become conditioned to express certain forms and motions due to the presence of inertial forces and fulcrums. These forces may be located in the SBJ itself, or may be an expression of inertial issues remote to its immediate dynamics. An inertial pattern in the cranial base may be formed as a result of local unresolved traumatic forces, or may be generated in compensation for inertial fulcrums found almost anywhere in the body.

As we shall see, these unresolved issues will be expressed around the SBJ in particular ways. Sutherland observed that inertial patterns in the cranium can be broken down into particular components and that these can be named and eventually directly perceived. He outlined six inertial patterns that are commonly expressed around and in the SBJ. In the following sections you will begin to explore these patterns and learn to perceive and orient to them.
